Harvest = Joy

The class joins a couple members of the garden committee for the annual fall harvest. Kimora unearths the first beet.

Teamwork gets it done.

After picking loads of tomatoes and peppers, Sabine tugs on a vine with all her might (and eventually falls to the ground when it gives).

Ailynn and Sammy investigate a vine covered with tiny orbs that resemble mini watermelons.

Conner displays a perfect bell pepper.

Nylah asks, "What's this?"

A peculiar carrot brings a smile to Zack's face.

Milo and Claren transport a tomato vine twice their size.

Lake's bucket of tomatoes overruneth.

What happened to Sam's ears?

It's time to celebrate real food!

What's for snack?

Friday's healthy snack includes fresh okra, banana peppers, cherry tomatoes and figs from the school vegetable beds. For many, this was a first taste of these tasty fruits and vegetables. We'll devour the fat watermelon above on Monday (and maybe the rest of the week).

Tart, Sweet and Spicy

Head to the veggie beds at school for blueberries, jalapenos, tomatoes and apples. If extra quiet, you might meet a resident baby rabbit about the size of a gerbil. The watermelon vine is taking over and figs are on the way!

2012 Fall Harvest

One of the highlights this week was harvesting banana peppers and okra (plus a few weeds). Seonni and others discovered a handful of wiggly neighbors living in the soil, while Atticus and Lena befriended some pollinators. Later that afternoon, volunteers forked (turned over the soil) the beds, then added compost. Next week we'll enjoy the mild peppers during snack. What would you like to plant next?

5 Minute Harvest

A five minute walk around the veggie beds at school fills a small bag with the figs, okra, peppers, and tomatoes above.  Help yourself before school starts!

Summer Veggies!

The sweetest cherry tomatoes and those tasty peppers often found in sandwiches and salad bars (pepperoncini) are bursting out of our vegetable bed.

Tomatoes will ripen throughout summer, so only pick the orangest ones.  Some have a split along one side, but you can still eat them.  If you're worried about bugs, slice 'em in half.  If you don't see anything suspicious, enjoy!
