Ken Surritte is the founder of Water is Life. Here he describes an inspirational experience that illustrates how small acts of kindness can make a huge difference:
While helping the clean-up of Hurricane Katrina, I was reminded of the story of the little boy that was on the beach after a storm. There were thousands of starfish washed up on the beach. The little boy started picking starfish up one by one and throwing them back into the water. An old man watching this just shook his head thinking, "One little boy and so many starfish, he could never help them all." So the old man went down to the boy and told him, "Don't you know you will never make a difference? There are too many starfish washed up on the beach." The little boy looked at the old man and then reached down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the water and said, "It made a difference to that one."
During snack one day last year, we discussed bucket lists, and in an effort to activate prior knowledge of goal setting, I asked the class what they would put on theirs. Before viewing or even mentioning the short film above, Ally said she wants to help people around the world access water by drilling wells. Josie said she wants to help ensure that water sources are free from contamination. How lucky are we here at Chase Street to spend our days among such compassionate souls?
