Georgia On My Mind

Ray Charles on the Dick Cavett Show, September 18th, 1972

Georgia was the theme of this year's field day, so each station had a connection to the Peach State.

Mrs. Moon introduced our first stop with some information about cotton, one of Georgia's most abundant crops.

The kids quickly developed techniques for blowing their cotton balls faster and faster across the floor. Bendy straws helped.

Holland wiggled across the floor on his stomach like an endangered flatwoods salamander.

Once Emma placed one end of the straw in her mouth, there was no stopping her.

Aidan's sunglasses only slowed him for a second.

Next came the Hunger Games (just kidding)…

When the Olympics came to Georgia in 1996, Stone Mountain hosted the archery events.

The favorite field day event soaked just about everyone. Amicalola Falls, located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, is the tallest water fall in the state (729 feet).

Mrs. Dean explains the role of NASCAR pit crews, who change tires in a mere 12 seconds at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

There were a few crashes, but no spectators were injured.

Penny puts on the brakes.

During round 2, they worked in pairs (slightly more challenging).

The sidewalk chalk center offered some creative rest as the class illustrated animals and symbols of Georgia, including Holland's endangered piping plover,

and Penny's West Indian manatee.

Aidan made a no smoking sign,

and you can probably figure out what Isaiah's G stands for.

Briana posed with her colorful Georgia peach.

Mr. Sugiuchi explained Georgia's current water wars with neighboring states, then the kids battled it out in a few games of tug-of-war.

It looks like the boys had one more person on their side, but...

the girls won (more than once).

Lena challenged Caylon to a one-on-one match.

The beach ball relay races celebrated Georgia's beautiful coastline.

Of all the events, this one had the most injuries.

Have you ever seen a choking hazard warning in so many languages?

At the state capital in Atlanta, a statue of Miss Freedom stands atop the gold (actually copper) dome.

Mr. Snow shared information about the Masters Golf Tournament that takes place in Augusta each year.

Luckily for Cherokee and Sasha, girls weren't excluded at Chase Street.

The Okefenokee Swamp event pitted turtles against alligators in a frenetic game of freeze tag.

Our last stop of the day was at the Atlanta Zoo activity, where the class pretended to be elephants sucking water into their (Nerf) trunks.

Mack demonstrated by shooting his mom in the face.

Little water made it into the bowls, but we had loads of fun.
