Global Youth Service Day, 2013

Global Youth Service Day is celebrated worldwide at the end of April (26th-28th), but we celebrated this year on May 3rd with a walking field trip around the Boulevard neighborhood.

Equipped with requisite vests and "litter gitters," we began picking up trash right away.

It's funny (not really) how many cigarette butts we found around medical office buildings.

The dirtiest location by far was between McDonalds and the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house, where the kids found a pair of pants. Luckily, we never saw the owner.

A variety of plants and gardens along Boulevard offered curious stops along the way.

The rain held off until we returned to school, and the trip was a success. In all, we collected around three bags of trash, and one bag of recyclables.

Global Youth Service Day

Thanks to Chase Street parent Stacy Smith, from Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful, for loaning us enough gear for two classes.

The route began outside the 2nd/3rd grade wing, and continued around the neighborhood.

Everyone we talked to along the way appreciated the effort to - as Thomas, Hunter, and Selina shouted - "Keep Athens beautiful!"

Elio Life Reflextion

We went on a walking field trip to Josie's house.  I learned how to identify some plants.  I was happy to see so much wild life in someones back yard.  I was so happy to see so many plants I made a recycled garden bed.  The garden bed is made out of a card board box with an arch at the back of it. I'm going to attach two poles to it so when it gets cold I can lay a tarp across them.  I cut off the bottom of the box so the roots can go into the ground and so that worms can get in.
