Granite Rocks!


Around 85 third graders load up two busses and head east.


Is it a field trip to Tatooine?

Lucian says, "Tatooine's weathered landscape is mostly sedimentary rock." Lelan adds, "This place is totally igneous!" Tyler shouts, "It's all granite!"


Just to be on the safe side, Layla scans the cliffs.


After a slow and winding drive down a dirt road, the busses arrive at the bottom of a rock quarry in Winterville. Classes are split into groups. We climb aboard a massive CAT 775F rock truck.



By turn, Zack and his classmates plop down into the driver's seat to honk an underwhelming horn.
























The other three stations include painting a boulder, an explanation of the geological makeup of the quarry, and collecting/playing in piles of granite.











Before the busses climb their way out of the incredible chunk of granite formed between 325 and 260 million years ago, when North America was colliding with Africa, Ailynn catches a glimpse of a small hero who also sports a white helmet...
